More Information Required.

Is anyone out there, who subscribes to 'SiteMeter', able to answer this for me?

I don't have a SiteMeter so I'm not exactly sure what information it gives you. Does it tell you the ip identity of the visitor who has left a comment, or does it only tell you the ip identities of those who were on your site when that comment was left? For instance, if there are two people visting your site at the same time, and one of them leaves a message, can SiteMeter actually determine which one of those two visitors left the message, or is that for you to decide based on the time and length of that persons stay?

Is it at all possible that Jane and Doug have made a "mistake", or have they just lied?

  1. Sitemeter only tells you who was on your blog at the time that someone posted a comment. It doesn't say who posted the comment. You can find that out yourself by clicking on the sitemaster icon, as it shows you everything, including referrers, location (roughly - as it doesn't pinpoint an exact address just a general area) and how long someone was online.

    If the blog owner opts for comment notification, they get an email letting them know a post has been left. However, this email, because it comes via blogger, uses a blogger IP number, which is the same in every case, so they wouldn't be able to tell from it where the poster was located. It could/would give the impression that all posters were from the same area. So yes, they could have made a mistake if they were using this means of tracking down IP addresses.

  2. Thank you for that information, I've done what you said and checked for myself on Cheadles blog; his SiteMeter is still on.

    Cheadle left me this comment yesterday;

    "When you commented on my blog I checked the IP address which you commented from and guess what? It matched the one which Douglas commented from. What I'd like to see you do now is explain how that could have happened when you live so far apart.."

    The two messages Cheadle mentioned were sent on the 26 feb at 15.36, by Douglas, and at 18.17 by me. If any one cares to check Cheadle's SiteMeter they will see they were sent from two different IP addresses.

    So it wasn't a "mistake" after all, and he is in fact a lying scumbag, who relies on the ignorance of others!

  3. Someone emailed me today and said those aren't the two comments Cheadle was talking about, so presumably he must be talking about the comment I left on the 30 Jan, two days before Cheadle added SiteMeter to his blog!
